Stabbing suspect found hiding under car

MIDDLETOWN — A squabble over money led to the stabbing of a Middletown man in his home early Tuesday according to police.

Around 1:20 a.m., Middletown police responded to the 1400 block of Woodlawn Avenue to find resident Ron Mills with a stab wound to the chest, said Lt. Scott Reeve.

Reeve said Mills identified the suspect as John Henry Miller, 35, of the same apartment complex. Mills told police the suspect had allegedly stabbed him with a knife before fleeing the scene on foot with Mills’ cell phone and Social Security payment.

At around 3:20 a.m., police located Miller reportedly hiding under a parked vehicle near the intersection of Central Avenue and Moore Street. Reeve said officers recovered the cell phone and money but no weapon has been found.

Miller is charged with felonious assault with a weapon and aggravated robbery. His bond in Middletown City Jail is set at $150,000.

Miller was arraigned Tuesday in Middletown Municipal Court and a hearing is set for 9 a.m. today, March 7. Miller has multiple prior charges including drug abuse, petty theft and criminal trespass, according to court records.

Mills is being treated at Atrium Medical Center and underwent surgery Tuesday, police said. Reeve said Tuesday afternoon that Mills’ surgery was successful.

Reeve said several witnesses spoke with police including landlord Jim Patrick. Reeve said Patrick told police he was in his downstairs apartment when he heard the sound of someone falling down the steps.

Patrick said when he came outside he saw Miller and questioned him before Miller continued to flee toward Baltimore Street.
