Evans was being held Thursday in the Montgomery County Jail, where he could face charges in the Wednesday afternoon death of Perry Kreider, 66, of Englewood. Kreider died in the five-vehicle rear-end, chain-reaction accident on I-75 North in Moraine.
Two others who were injured were taken to area hospitals. The accident, which occurred just before 3 p.m., closed all northbound lanes for roughly 5 1/2 hours.
The accident scene was north of the Dryden Road ramp onto the interstate and south of the off-ramp to Edwin C. Moses Boulevard.
Witnesses told police they saw the truck try to leave the scene, then saw a man get out and run north along the interstate. Police said they arrested that man, identified as Evans, on Sandridge Drive moments after he scaled a fence.
Among the charges Evans may face is aggravated vehicular homicide, failing to stop at an accident and tampering with evidence, according to jail records.
Records involving the crash had not been filed by Thursday afternoon, according to Moraine police. Attempts to reach Moraine police involved in the case were unsuccessful.
Dayton court records show Evans has pleaded guilty five times since 2008 on charges involving his driver’s license, including driving without a license and driving under suspension.
The truck involved in the accident Wednesday indicated it belonged to MNH Trucking, LCC. When contacted Thursday, a person answering the phone for a Vandalia company with that name declined to comment.
Meanwhile, the charges pending against Evans may not be considered until next week, said Greg Flannagan, public information officer for the Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Office.
Flannagan said traffic fatalities involve extensive investigation because of “all the contributing factors that may come in to play.”
