Victim identified in fatal shooting outside restaurant

DAYTON — The Montgomery County Coroner’s office has identified the name of a 23-year-old Dayton man who was killed after an altercation at a Dayton restaurant on Friday, Nov. 6, as Chad DeWitt.

Police were dispatched to Moe’s Fish & Chicken, 4043 Free Pike, about 11:22 p.m. on a report of a shooting, which also wounded a 38-year-old man.

The inital cause of the altercation has not been determined.

DeWitt was shot once in the abdomen, according to Dayton Lt. Brian Johns. The 38-year-old was shot in the abdomen and chest and was taken to Miami Valley Hospital.

The 38-year-old man’s condition was unknown Saturday, Nov. 7, but a coroner’s official said there was only one homicide victim brought into the coroner’s office as a result of an incident that happened in Dayton.

The 38-year-old man told investigators that DeWitt instigated the incident, Johns said. At least one of the men had a concealed-carry permit, according to Johns.

Investigators aren’t sure why the men were shooting at each other or what caused the altercation that led to the shooting, Johns said.

Robert Faiz, who identified himself as the manager of the restaurant, said one of the victims tried to come into the business after he had been shot and collapsed outside the front door.

“Everything is alright inside,” Faiz said, noting that the incident occurred outside his business.

Police aren’t sure which of the victims was the one who collapsed at the door.

Faiz said the restaurant did close early because of the incident, noting that the place usually is open until midnight.

No other details about the shooting were immediately available on Saturday.
