Warrant issued for man accused in Rite Aid robbery after missing court

Two days after a man was sentenced to prison in connection to a Park Layne Rite Aid robbery, his co-conspirator failed to show up to court for his sentencing.

A warrant was issued for Jamical Betts, 19. He was supposed to be sentenced on an aggravated robbery charge and a gun specification charge Thursday morning in Clark County Common Pleas Court.

He never showed.

Clark County Common Pleas Judge Richard O’Neill issued the warrant after defense attorneys told him that they hadn’t had contact with the defendant for a while.

Betts was originally charged with numerous felonies in connection with the armed robbery. He pleaded guilty in late November to the aggravated robbery charge and the gun specifications.

However, in December, Betts attempted to change his plea in the case. His motion to withdraw his guilty plea was denied by O’Neill this month.

Betts was convicted of robbing the Park Layne store with Cameron Redd, 19. Redd was sentenced to three years in prison in connection with the crime on Tuesday.

During the robbery, one of the men went in and passed the pharmacist a note demanding a long list of drugs, according to law enforcement. The man threatened to have a gun — and use it — if the exchange didn’t go smoothly, according to deputies.

The men made off with the drugs, which were never recovered, authorities say.

Redd and Betts were eventually taken into custody in Middletown after police say they robbed a Rite Aid there, asking for the same items by way of another note.
