Autopsy of inmate won't be released during investigation

The results of a Warren Correctional Institution inmate’s autopsy won’t be released because of the “criminal investigation,” according to a coroner official.

Kelvin Bunton, 31, was pronounced dead at 4:08 p.m. on Dec. 19 at Atrium Medical Center, said Greg Craft, public information officer at the prison. He said the Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating the circumstances surrounding Bunton’s death.

An autopsy was performed by the Warren County Coroner’s Office, an official said.

No one from the OSP was available to comment today, an official said. She said Sgt. James Schlotterbeck, who last week classified the investigation as “on-going,” was off work the rest of this week.

Bunton was incarcerated Dec. 19, 2017, on two counts of felony drug trafficking from Cuyahoga County and was scheduled to be released June 12, 2022, Craft said.

Bunton had been an inmate at WCI since Oct. 31, 2019.

Schlotterbeck said no arrests have been made. He said the state patrol investigates any criminal activity on state-owned or leased property.
