Woman who says she struck man with a pipe facing murder charges

Veronica Spears admits she hit William Cheeks, but didn’t kill him.

DAYTON — A woman who admitted hitting William “Bill” Cheeks in the head with a pipe two days before his death has been arrested on a murder charge, police said.

Veronica Spears, 45, was booked into the Montgomery County Jail Wednesday morning, Feb. 17, nearly five days after she dropped Cheeks off at Good Samaritan Hospital with significant head injuries.

Spears said nothing to television cameras as she was led to jail, but Tuesday at the same apartment police searched for evidence, she admitted striking him in the head with a pipe.

“They (police) consider me a suspect,” Spears said Tuesday. “Yeah I hit him, but I didn’t kill him.”

Cheeks died at Miami Valley Hospital Monday morning, two days after Spears dropped him off at the hospital. An autopsy found Cheeks died of blunt force trauma to the head.

Sgt. Gary White said “evidence” was found in Spears’ apartment at 1665 Tuttle Ave., that was linked to Cheeks’ death. He would not elaborate on what was found.

The two might have been living together in Spears apartment, White said.

A background check found Spears has been arrested a handful of times on charges from prostitution to felonious assault, according to jail records.

She was indicted by a grand jury in 2007 on felony burglary with a deadly and felony assault with a deadly weapon, but common pleas Judge Jeffrey Froelich later accepted her guilty plea to a fourth-degree felony burglary charge, according to court records.

Froelich sentenced Spears to five years of community control and 34 days in jail with credit for time served, court records show.

Cheeks is the city’s sixth homicide victim this year.
