12-year-old girl shot in leg after gun falls from stroller

DAYTON — A 12-year-old girl was shot in the leg after a .22 caliber revolver wrapped in a T-shirt fell from a stroller at about 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 1.

Dayton police are investigating the shooting at 1335 Miami Chapel Road as an accident, said Dayton police Sgt. Stephen Clark.

The girl was taken to the Children’s Medical Center of Dayton with the non-life threatening injury, he said.

There were several adults and children in the home when the gun hit the ground and fired, Clark said.

He noted that guns never should be left unattended around children.

Clark said it was unclear how the gun happened to be wrapped in the shirt or why it was placed in the upper section of the unoccupied stroller.

Virginia Smith, the grandmother of a 17-year-old boy initially cuffed and questioned by police, said those in the house told her a group of youth found the gun while walking around the neighborhood.

The small, white handled gun was wrapped in the shirt and placed in the stroller.

“They should have told somebody,” she said when asked what the children should have done after finding the weapon.
