Error causes late deposit for Fifth Third customers

Friday is payday for many, but Fifth Third Bank customers who woke up this morning and checked their accounts didn’t see their direct deposits right away.

A “processing delay” affected Fifth Third’s checking and savings account customers across the company’s 12-state footprint, said Fifth Third spokeswoman Stephanie Honan. Cincinnati-based Fifth Third is the largest bank by deposits in Cincinnati and Dayton.

The issue is now resolved, Honan said.

“Customer balance information and transaction detail are accurate as of 9:30 this morning and we are operating business as usual,” she said.

Customer balances were corrected first. Fifth Third then worked to update the transaction details, Honan said.

“We have quality assurance programs in place to identify these sorts of issues and certainly we’ll be looking at this issue,” Honan said. “That’s how the issue was flagged.”

Honan said the delays were a processing error and not due to hacking or a compromise of the website.
