The company has recently been cited by EPA for failing to properly cover and contain the runoff water from the salt pile, which officials fear is leaking into the Mad River aquifer underneath the area.
Health officials say if the aquifer is breached, taxpayers could have to shell out millions of dollars to install special filters at the Springfield water plant to remove the salt and make it safe to drink.
