FCC Launches New Efforts In Digital Transition

Although Dayton television stations are delaying the switch to Digital Television, 36% of all television stations in the U.S. will have shut down their analog signals by February 18th.

Acting FCC Chairman Michael Copps congratulated broadcasters for working with the Commission to ensure viewers would still receive emergency information during the final stages of DTV transition. "This is not just about whether people can watch their favorite reality show," said Copps in an FCC news release, "It's about whether viewers have access to vital emergency alerts, weather, news and public affairs."

The FCC is urging viewers in Dayton and across the country to call its toll free hotline at 1-888-225-5322 or visit a new web page to get their questions answered.

A February 1st report by Nielsen Media indicated approximately 30,000 Miami Valley homes would lose all television reception if Dayton stations had proceeded with analog shutdown on February 17th. After working to reschedule work replacing its current analog antenna with its new permanent digital antenna until May, WHIO-TV is requesting that the FCC change its analog shutdown date to May 3rd, 2009.
