Firefighters plan educational activities with Super Saturday Kickoff

Wright-Patterson Air Force Base firefighters are set to kick off this year’s Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 7-13.

“Fire Prevention Week promises to be a great time with many exciting activities for the entire Wright-Patterson Air Force Base community,” said Fire Inspector Garth Musgrove.

Firefighters will be on hand to show off their fire apparatus and specialized rescue equipment at Kittyhawk Center’s Exchange/Commissary parking lot Oct. 6, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sparky the Dalmatian will be stopping by to visit with youngsters and Pumper, the department’s remote-controlled fire truck, will be on hand, along with Patches, the fire dog. The Fire Safety House will be on hand as well.

This year’s FPW campaign, “Look. Listen. Learn. Be aware. Fire can happen anywhere,” works to educate people about three basic but essential steps to take to reduce the likelihood of having a fire – and how to escape safely in the event of one:

  • "LOOK" for places fire could start. Take a good look around your home. Identify potential fire hazards and take care of them.
  • "LISTEN" for the sound of the smoke alarm. You could have only minutes to escape safely once the smoke alarm sounds. Go to your outside meeting place, which should be a safe distance from the home and where everyone should know to meet.
  • "LEARN" two ways out of every room and make sure all doors and windows leading outside open easily and are free of clutter.

Fire Prevention Chief Larry Osterhage added, “We strive every day to get our message out to the entire community we serve; fire safety affects everyone. The annual ‘Super Saturday Kickoff’ to Fire Prevention Week is our best chance to meet everyone and provide real fire safety education and training. We hope to see everyone there and promise a good time will be had by all.”

Wright-Patterson AFB’s Fire Department has teamed up with the nonprofit National Fire Protection Association, official sponsor of Fire Prevention Week, for nearly 90 years, and other fire departments around the country, to execute the campaign.

Other activities are scheduled throughout the remainder of the week, including visits to child care facilities and tours of Wright-Patterson AFB’s three fire stations. Firefighters will be on hand to accommodate visitors, during normal duty hours, throughout Fire Prevention Week.

To arrange a visit to any of the stations, or for more information about Fire Prevention Week, call the base fire department at 257-4075.
