Firefighters Suffer Burns In BMV Fire

Authorities said two firefighters suffered minor burns battling a blaze that destroyed the motor vehicles bureau and an adjacent upholstery shop in downtown Union City. They said a third building suffered smoke and water damage.

None of the businesses' employees were injured.

Union City Fire Chief Matt Blankley said the fire on Wednesday probably started in the fluorescent lights inside the century-old, two-story brick building that housed the BMV. From there, it grew out of control, feeding off the wood floors and spreading through the brick wall that separated the BMV office from the upholstery shop.

Firefighters from almost a dozen other companies, including one from neighboring Union City, Ohio, took more than four hours to extinguish the blaze.
