Get money for used tires at Montgomery County recycling event

Montgomery County residents can earn money for scrap tires in September.

The county’s Environmental Services division will host its fifth annual Tire Buyback on Sept. 23 at the Montgomery County Solid Waste District Encrete Lane in Moraine.

Residents can earn $2 for every scrap/used tire they bring up to a maximum of 10 tires per vehicle, according to the county. The event is scheduled to run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The event is open to all Montgomery County residents and identification will be required to confirm residency. Only passenger vehicle tires – not farm tires, tractor tires or oversized tires - will be accepted, according to the county.

All tires collected will be shredded and recycled, and used to make playground mulch, landfill liner and other materials. Last year, Montgomery County collected 14,985 tires, weighing about 160 tons.

Since 2013, the Solid Waste District has collected more than 78,000 tires.
