Greenville pedestrian struck remains critical

UPDATE @ 5:45 p.m. Oct. 5:

Randy Brooks was still in critical condition this evening at Miami Valley Hospital. The 56-year-old Greenville man was flown by CareFlight on Wednesday after he was struck by a car while he was sitting on the curb in his front yard on Washington Avenue, Greenville police said.

The driver of the vehicle, 31-year-old Sarah Fleming, was arrested at the crash scene on suspicion of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, but the charge was cleared and she was released from the Darke County Jail. Greenville police said the case would be presented to a Darke County grand jury for review.

UPDATE @ 3:35 p.m. Oct. 3: Randy Brooks, 56, of Greenville remains in critical condition in intensive care at Miami Valley Hospital, a spokeswoman confirmed this afternoon. He was flown by CareFlight to the hospital Wednesday after he was struck by a vehicle while he was sitting on the curb in his front yard, police said.

Sarah Fleming, the 31-year-old driver of the vehicle that struck Brooks, has since been released from the Darke County Jail, records show.

UPDATE @ 4:45 p.m. Oct. 2: Greenville police have dropped the OVI charge against Sarah Fleming stemming from a crash involving a pedestrian and are sending the case to a Darke County grand jury for review.

UPDATE @ 10:58 p.m.: Greenville police released the names of both the pedestrian and driver in this evening's crash.

The victim is 56-year-old Randy Brooks, who was struck by a vehicle while he was sitting on a curb in his front yard. He was flown to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, where his condition was not able to be released late this evening.

The driver was identified as 31-year-old Sarah Fleming. She was booked into the Darke County Jail on suspicion of operating a vehicle while intoxicated. Police say she could face additional charges.

UPDATE @ 6:25 p.m.: Officer Alan Smith of the Greenville Police Department said the woman driving the car was traveling east on Pine Street when she struck a pedestrian while she was trying to turn onto Washington Avenue.

"While negotiating a turn, the vehicle went too far and into the yard" of a home in the 500 block of Washington Avenue, he said.

Two people were sitting on the curb, but only one was struck. That man was taken by CareFlight to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton. The man's name and condition were not released.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, however, alcohol is suspected, Smith said.

"We believe the person is intoxicated at this time and has a strong odor of alcohol on her breath," he said. "The driver is looking at OVI charges."

UPDATE @ 6 p.m.: A pedestrian struck by a car earlier this evening was flown to Miami Valley Hospital.

The male was struck just before 5 p.m. in the 500 block of Washington Avenue by a woman who lost control after turning north on Washington Avenue from Pine Street, according to our media partner, the Early Bird Paper.

A second male was able to get out of the way and avoid being hit by the car, the newspaper reported.

CareFlight is responding this evening to a pedestrian who was struck by a car.

The accident happened shortly before 5 p.m. at the intersection of Washington and Pine roads.

Extra Greenville police officers also were called to help with traffic control, according to dispatchers.

The name, age and gender of the pedestrian was not immediately available.
