Name: Tara Nichols

Hometown: Riverside

Title: Registered Nurse

Where do you work? Fidelity Home Healthcare

Describe what your day is like/what you do: Every day I get to spend time with people after they have had possibly some of the worst days of their lives in the hospital, educating them on managing new disease diagnoses, doing wound care and helping them remain safely in their homes and staying out of the hospital or nursing homes. Some days these patients and families are so overwhelmed with everything new they are going to have to manage and my job is to help take that burden off of them and make their new normal manageable and less scary.

What inspired you to get into health care? My inspiration came from watching my grandmother be diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and turn into someone I did not know how to help. Not having that education into how to deal with this terrible disease led me to becoming a nurse and changed my life forever. There is nothing I’d rather be doing than helping other people.

What’s a memorable experience you’ve had in health care? My most memorable experience to date would be while I was working as a pulmonary nurse at a local hospital. I met a patient who had lost both parents and was dependent on a ventilator. His sweet soul had the best smile that lit up the room every single time I walked in. No matter the night I was having, he always turned it around and made me so thankful I was able to care for him.

What do you want readers to know about your job right now? I have found that there is no typical day in nursing no matter where I go. The common things I have found is each day is filled with the unknown, moments can be crazy and stressful, but at the end of each day I find peace knowing I have helped someone in some way.
