The dog found this week with no food or water and covered in severe open wounds and obviously starving “has a long road ahead of him,” but is expected to make a full recovery, according to a post on the Humane Society’s Facebook page.

David Neanover, 36, of Reily Twp., was charged with cruelty to a companion animal after anonymous complaints came in about an emaciated dog, said Butler County Sheriff Richard K. Jones.

After Butler County Sheriff’s Office dog wardens responded to 6165 Main St. they found the dog, the sheriff said.

The dog is hospitalized at Animal Care Centers, according to the post. The dog, named Lucifer, remains in “a somewhat critical state,” the post read.

Bloodwork showed he’s slightly anemic and has low protein levels, but all of that is expected with an animal in his condition. The post said his levels should go “back to normal” once his body is consistently getting the nutrients it needs.

The medical staff was surprised when X-rays showed rocks in the dog’s stomach. He lived his life on a very short chain and was “deprived food for quite some time,” the post read.

He’s eating a small amount every two hours of watered down, high protein/fat canned food.
