Many phone and cable companies now offer VOIP or Voice over Internet Protocol. Consumer expert Clark Howard has been using Internet phone service for years.

He said this is a great time to cash in on free long distance or low-cost plans anywhere in the world. However, he warns that there are some drawbacks.

If you are going to convert to Internet phone service, Clark Howard recommends that you keep your land line for at least 90 days to make sure that your Internet phone service works properly.
