Kroger to hire 1,200 permanent workers

Kroger Co. plans to hire about 1,200 new employees for its stores in the Dayton and Cincinnati areas, company officials announced Thursday.

The Cincinnati-based grocery retailer is looking to fill permanent, part-time positions at Kroger stores from northern Kentucky to Springfield, said Kathy Casebolt, a company spokeswoman. The openings are related to the upcoming holiday season, as well as a number of recent new store openings, she said.

“With the staff being dispersed through the new stores and the remodels, and new departments being added to existing stores, we have some positions that need to be filled at all the stores in the area,” Casebolt said.

The Cincinnati division of Kroger includes 74 Cincinnati-area stores and 23 Dayton-area stores.

Casebolt said the company typically adds about 50 employees for a newly remodeled store, and up to 200 workers for its Marketplace store format, which offers full-service grocery and pharmacy departments as well as an expanded general merchandise area that includes outdoor living products, home goods and toys.

Most of the company’s recent hiring events have been specific for stores preparing to open, such as the new Kroger Marketplace in Amelia, near Cincinnati in Clermont County.

“Since this one is so widespread, that would account for the larger number,” she said.

Kroger is hiring for all departments and all shifts. The positions are part-time to start, Casebolt said.

“There are a lot of opportunities for advancement here,” she said. “It is a good solid company. So, if you can get your foot in the door, the possibilities are endless.”

Kroger is the largest traditional grocery retailer in the U.S., with 2,424 supermarkets in 31 states, according to company filings. Kroger employs more than 339,000 associates. The company had $96.8 billion in total sales for fiscal year 2012, up 7 percent from $90.4 billion in fiscal 2011.

Kroger will host a series of career fairs starting today at the Savannah Center, 5533 Chappell Crossing Blvd., West Chester Twp.

Job fairs also are scheduled for Nov. 7-8 at the Holiday Inn Dayton Fairborn, 2800 Presidential Drive, Fairborn; and Nov. 7-8 at Holiday Inn Erlanger, 1717 Airport Exchange Blvd., Erlanger, Ky.
