Six new members join UD board

Three University of Dayton graduates are among the six new members of the school’s board of trustees, which is in the midst of a search to replace its president for the last 13 years.

In December, the university announced President Daniel Curran would step down at the end of the 2015-16 academic year.

The new members will vote on the new president but will not be part of the presidential search, which is already in the process of finding candidates. Approval requires at least a two-thirds vote of the board, according to the university’s code of regulations.

The new trustees will serve a three-year term on the 165-year-old university’s 32-person board.

“They will help chart a strategic course for our future — one that prepares our students, in the Catholic, Marianist tradition, to use their education and leadership skills to serve others,” Curran said in a prepared statement.

The UD graduates are William Campbell, a director at the Marianist Province of the United States; Catherine Babington, a retired vice president of investor relations; and Richard Granite, co-owner of Florida-based Granite Diagnostic Laboratories Inc. and president of the University of Dayton Alumni Association.

Also joining the board are Jenell Ross, president of Bob Ross Auto Group; Thomas Cronin Jr., founder and president of Dayton Freight Lines Inc.; and Derek Porter, a senior vice president at Texas-based Panda Power funds.

Ross, who grew up in the area, called joining the board a “true honor.”

She said the wants the next president to build on what Curran has established.

“Having an individual that possesses a diverse skill set is going to be paramount as UD continues to solidify its place in history,” she said.
