Springboro High School to be featured at national conference

Staff asked to present successful achievement strategies

Springboro High School’s success at improving student achievement has gained national attention.

The school is recognized as one of the top 100 high schools in the country and will be highlighted at a national education conference this summer.

High school staff recently was awarded a $2,000 grant and invited by the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) to present at the High Schools That Work (HSTW) 2013 national conference.

“I feel quite honored the executive director of the national organization specifically invited Springboro to present,” said Dr. Ron Malone, SHS principal.

High Schools That Work is a national, comprehensive school improvement framework dedicated to creating a culture of high expectations that motivates students to make the effort to succeed in school. SHS is among more than 1,200 schools across the country to use the HSTW key practices to raise student achievement and prepare students for postsecondary studies and careers.

As part of the reform model, seniors are assessed every two years to measure student performance and academic growth in math, science and English. Springboro’s results earned the high school a spot in the top 100 high schools.

Malone said the school’s presentation at the conference in July will focus on strategies used at Springboro High School to improve student performance and bolster student growth.

“We will discuss how Springboro uses data analysis to evaluate the effectiveness of our instructional practices and strategies we employ to make our curriculum more rigorous,” he explained.

Malone said the quality of instruction at SHS has consistently improved in the past decade through the HSTW initiative.

“The HSTW program does a great job combining the art of teaching and the science of teaching,” he explained. “The conference provides tremendous staff development with successful teaching strategies that work in a variety of settings.”

This year’s HSTW Staff Development Conference will focus on supplying educators with research and new strategies to provide students with relevant, meaningful educational experiences, so more students are prepared for college and careers in the 21st-century economy.
