Tipp City schools, parents discussing racist comments

Several students posted derogatory comments on social media, according to school officials.

Tipp City schools officials said Monday that fewer than a dozen high school students were believed to have been involved in making offensive racist and other derogatory comments on social media.

A written response to questions about the alleged comments and the schools’ response was issued Monday afternoon by Liz Robbins, school community relations coordinator.

“Tipp City Schools has zero tolerance for racism, does not condone this behavior and recognizes that such comments are not acceptable,” district leaders said.

Parents of students identified as involved in the incidents were notified and are in discussions with the district, according to the statement.

“We are working with the parents on appropriate action that will help make this a learning experience for the students,” said Steve Vernoff, high school principal.

He said there was no evidence of postings taking place during school hours.

Officials said they became aware of the comments over the weekend, but did not respond to a question as to how they became aware. Superintendent Gretta Kumpf commented on the high school Twitter and Facebook pages over the weekend.

“It cannot be stated strongly enough that these posts contradict the core beliefs of respect, equality and diversity that we try to teach our students,” the district said Monday. “This situation is a reminder for all of us to encourage acceptance of one another on and off the small screen of social media. That is what our school stands for and we will not accept less.”
