Local Soldier, Wife Helping Orphans in Afghanistan

A Dayton woman said this is a vital time now that Osama bin Laden is dead. She and her husband are helping Afghanistan orphans.

Molly Shaw's husband, Billy, is on his second tour of duty in Afghanistan. She is not allowed to say where her husband is stationed, but he found an orphanage there that has become a big part of their lives.

"He visited and basically fell in love with them. I mean, they're just innocent, beautiful little children," Shaw said.

Molly Shaw said there is a 12-foot rule when her husband is gone, meaning you can't go farther than that without seeing a reminder of Billy.

"It is absolutely excruciating not to have him here," she said.

Molly Shaw said one care package to the orphanage has turned into 55 boxes in just three days. She said the boxes contain clothes, shoes and other miscellaneous items.

She and some friends went through their homes and grabbed things that they were not using anymore. Her husband has wanted to work on this project for a while, but after bin Laden's death, they felt they had to do something immediately.

"This isn't politically motivated. This isn't Republican or Democrat. This is 'Hey guys. We have two options here. The first option is we let it go. We take care of our own.'"

Molly Shaw is choosing the second option, which is to make the care packages and send to them to children that she will never know in hopes that they will understand they are receiving something more than just the supplies inside them.
