SMART and Mohawk closed this year. Glatfelter decided to pull its paper sheeting functions in house, Lauver said.
Advanced Paper, 1225 Hook Drive, has been winding down employment from a peak of 90 employees since it was first announced last fall the Hamilton mills would be closing, Lauver said. It was down to 17 employees when the decision was made to close.
“The remaining business that we had was low-margin stuff, low-profit stuff that we couldn’t justify,” he said.
Almost a year ago, Advanced Paper told the Middletown Journal it was growing so much it was running out of room.
Advanced Paper, a Wisconsin company, bought the former Picard Paper Processing in Middletown.
As a paper convertor, it would take nearly two-ton paper rolls that come from mills and make them into 8.5-by-11 inch copy paper.
Advanced Paper’s Ripon, Wis., facility will stay open, Lauver said.
“There’s still a good concentration of paper manufacturing in Wisconsin so there’s more opportunity in Wisconsin,” he said.
