Air Force museum download an uplifting experience

Now you can imagine yourself inside the cockpit of a B-29 Bockscar or even an F-4C in a single day.

This virtual pilot experience can be had from your home, your car, or anywhere you access your iPhone or laptop. The new ACI Cockpit360 app is available from the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force and AeroCapture Images.

This free app allows aircraft and history enthusiasts to see more than 20 cockpits up close. Immerse yourself in the powerful history of the Bockscar cockpit where an atomic bomb was launched, ending WWII.

“The museum wanted a way to let people see the interiors of the aircraft without compromising their preservation,” said lead project manager Bryan Carnes. “We’re thrilled to be able to give people a chance to look inside the aircraft, and we look forward to adding more photos in the future.”

The app is currently available for a free download from the Apple iTunes store, and a Droid version is in the planning stages. Several of the aircraft’s images were taken in multiple nodes, or spaces. In a few months, these photos will also be added to the museum’s existing 360-degree virtual tour.

“Personally, the most satisfying element is knowing that aviation enthusiasts with limited mobility and access can now have a virtual experience which was once reserved for pilots and crew,” said Lyle Jansma of AeroCapture Images. “Ultimately, this app will complement the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force experience for all.”
