HAMILTON — This year’s charity auction at Brown’s Marketplace is completely different from what past auction-goers might be used to.

Typically, the one-day auction was live. This year’s auction will last from today until next Saturday and will be silent.

“We want to get more people in front of the items, and not everyone can come on one day,” said Jody Boyd, manager at Brown’s Marketplace.

More than 100 Amish-built furniture pieces will be auctioned, including bedroom and dining room sets, bookcases, recliners, benches and desks.

“Usually items are sold for less than suggested retail, so it’s a great opportunity to get wonderful deals on top-quality furniture,” Boyd said.

Part of the proceeds go to Fort Hamilton Hospital, as part of a Colleagues of Fort Hamilton Hospital volunteer fundraiser. In 2009, $5,000 was donated to the Gebhart Center for Cancer Care.

“We wanted to do something with a charity to give back to the community we live in,” Boyd said of the auction’s start in 2007.

Peggy Turner, director of volunteer services at Fort Hamilton Hospital, said the money will go toward critical-care equipment.

“We’ve enjoyed three years now of partnership with Brown’s Marketplace,” Turner said.

Boyd said there are two customer appreciation days in conjunction with the silent auction — from 2 to 5 p.m. today and 4 to 7 p.m. Friday — with snacks and door prizes.

The silent auction is open to the public during normal business hours. All bids are due by 2 p.m. Oct. 9.
