Central State University student shot after another robbed

UPDATE @ 4:18 p.m.

Central State students have gathered in the sunken garden on campus to pray, a day after an armed robbery, shooting, and an assault on a police officer were reported at a residence hall.

UPDATE @ 2:25 p.m.

Central State University Police Chief Stephanie Hill commended her officers and those from other agencies who responded quickly to a shooting incident on campus last night.

Hill said at this point, there are several separate investigations being conducted.

The Greene County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a reported armed robbery, and the shooting that happened shortly thereafter. Those two incidents are still considered separate, Hill said.

“At 8:30 p.m. on Monday evening we received a report of an armed robbery in one of our student dorms,” Hill said. “Upon arrival to investigate that crime, we heard shots fired and officers immediately responded to the first floor of that building.”

The female student who was shot in the leg is stable and "her spirits were high,” according to Hill who spoke with the girl and her family at the hospital.

Police do not believe she was targeted, as the bullet went through the dorm room wall and struck her in bed.

A female student was also arrested last night for an assault on Chief Hill, but that incident was completely unrelated to the other investigations, she said.

There are several suspects in the robbery investigation and Hill confirmed they are students at CSU.

UPDATE @ 12:52 p.m.

A Central State University student suffered a gunshot wound in her leg after a bullet traveled through a wall, and struck her while she was in bed, according to authorities.

Police are unsure if the shooting is related to an attempted armed robbery in the same dorm building that occurred about 15 minutes earlier.

Three incidents happened on campus Monday night, including the robbery, the shooting and an assault on a police officer.

Police are working to confirm if the robbery and shooting, which happened in the same dorm building, are connected. The female student shot was taken to Miami Valley Hospital where she was listed in stable condition.

No arrests have been made in the shooting or robbery.

The incidents prompted a lockdown on campus.

Darion Jones was arrested at 10:33 p.m. at 1400 Brush Row Road, for assault on a police officer about 90 minutes after the lockdown order was issued. We are working to learn more about that incident.

FIRST REPORT

WILBERFORCE — A Central State University student was injured during a robbery and the campus was put on lockdown after gunfire was heard Monday night.

  • A Central State University female student was injured during a robbery in which officers heard gunfire.
  • The student was taken to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton and is in stable condition, according to a statement released by the university.
  • A woman was arrested on campus in an unrelated incident about  90 minutes after the lockdown was issued

CSU and Wilberforce University were on lockdown ordering students to shelter in place after an incident was reported around 8:30 p.m. inside one of the university buildings.

Crews were dispatched to Foundation Hall II in the 1400 block of Bush Row Road in Wilberforce.

The lockdown order was issued around 9 p.m. after a report of gunfire on campus amid reports that a woman was shot during an attempted robbery.

The Greene County Sheriff’s Office, the lead investigative agency on the case, would not confirm those reports and said no information would be released until Tuesday morning.

Law enforcement officers recovered a weapon after searching a nearby wooded area, according to the university statement.

It’s not clear whether police have identified a suspect, and no suspect description was released. A 19-year-old woman was taken into police custody and charged with aggravated assault about 90 minutes after the lockdown was issued, but authorities said the arrest in unrelated to the robbery and shots fired report.

The lockdown was lifted by 11:47 p.m., according to campus police.

There were no other injuries reported, and the incident remains under investigation by the Greene County Sheriff’s Office and campus police.

Students on campus tell our crew a woman was carried out of a co-ed freshman dormitory on a stretcher.

"We saw the girl coming out on a stretcher, crying with things all over her leg and stuff and it was horrible to see," sophomore Jade Irving said. "Afterwards we saw Twitter alerts saying there was an armed robbery and gunshots on campus."

Campus police from Wilberforce and Central State universities, as well as crews from Xenia and the Ohio State Highway Patrol assisted the Greene County Sheriff's Office at the scene.
