The boa currently weighs 10 pounds and is 4½ feet long. It could grow to be 10-feet long and weigh 50 pounds when it is full grown.
“The Boonshoft Museum has a long history of animal education and conservation, and we are so excited to continue that with our newest zoo resident,” Stephanie Hylinski, curator of live animals, said in a press release.
“Not only do they make a big impression, but larger snakes like our new red-tailed boa can help us teach visitors about snake biology, as well as the crucial role snakes play in their local ecosystem.”
The Boonshoft Museum is asking for help choosing a name for the constrictor from three options: Ruby, Rosa or Val (for Valentine).
Cast your vote on the museum's website or for those visiting the museum, ballots can be found at the snake enclosure in the Bieser Education Center. The deadline to submit votes is 5 p.m. March 3, 2019.
