Carlisle sends its perfect Indians into playoff action

Community enjoys festive atmosphere at pep rally before tonight’s game.

CARLISLE — Before the start of a communitywide pep rally to celebrate the first undefeated varsity football team in the history of Carlisle High School, about 15 football players were hanging out on the floor of the high school gymnasium, leisurely tossing a football around.

They were loose — laughing and goofing off.

The team emitted the impression they weren’t over-analyzing tonight’s playoff game against the Kenton Wildcats, who average 54 points per game.

Senior quarterback, Nick “Burt” Reynolds, said keeping loose was “extremely important.”

“We’ve worked hard this year,” he said. “And we’ve got a good game plan.”

Game plan?

“We’re going to ram it down their throats,” he said.

Carlisle’s Thursday night pep rally drew about 500 students, parents, staff and community members.

Beach balls bounced across a sea of red shirts that nearly filled the entire home side of the high school gymnasium.

Defensive coordinator Daryl Clark told the crowd the team will rely on the support of their student section as the Indians square off against the Wildcats.

“When (Kenton) has the football in their hands, we’ve got to make sure we’re making a lot of noise,” he said.

Carlisle Mayor Tim Humphries told the crowd he was a third-generation Carlisle Indian and then proclaimed Nov. 4, 2010, as “Carlisle High School Varsity Football Day.”

“We urge all citizens to make known their pride and the achievements of these outstanding students,” Humphries said.

In the two days that playoff tickets have been on sale, about 800 tickets have been sold to Carlisle fans, said Principal Matt Bishop. Laughlin Field seats about 2,200 people.

“You don’t think of Carlisle being a football power, but we’ve won the (Southwestern Buckeye League) four of the past 10 years,” he said. “There aren’t a lot of teams that can say that.”

Seth Everhart, a senior offensive tackle, said he appreciates the Indians’ underdog status heading into the Division IV, Region 16 playoff game.

“Everybody’s doubting us,” Everhart said. “I like to prove people wrong.”

The Indians face off at home against the Wildcats at 7:30 p.m. today.
