Cause of Gettysburg Ave. Burger King fire likely electrical

DAYTON — A structure fire at the Burger King restaurant, 1110 North Gettysburg Ave., just north of Hoover Avenue, reported at 1:05 p.m. and declared under control at 1:30 p.m., caused an estimated $80,000 in damage, according to Capt. Matt McClain of the Dayton Fire Department.

McClain said after their fire inspector looked into the matter they decided to call the cause of the fire “electrical, for the time being.” This is the initial ruling, he said. The insurance company knows the building better and they will inspect it too, he said. He said they suspect an electrical conduit in the wall may have started the fire. “We’re not calling it suspicious,” he said.

McClain said the fire moved from the women’s restroom all across the ceiling in void spaces to the whole back of the restaurant where the kitchen is.

The building had already been evacuated when they got there, he said. No one was injured.

Fighting the fire was difficult because of the building’s ceiling tiles, McClain said. Firefighters took a couple tiles down and thought they had the fire out only to find it had spread beyond other tiles. Each time they thought they might have it out, they found it had spread farther.

The restaurant will have to be closed for a while, he said. The restaurant’s manager was on site but said he could not comment on the fire. The Combined Health District of Montgomery County was notified of the fire, which is required for food service operations, McClain said.
