Champaign County to host drug take back day

Champaign County residents can safely dispose of unused prescription drugs at a drug take back day on Saturday.

The event will be held at the Johnson Twp.-St. Paris Joint Fire District, 403 W Main St., St. Paris., from noon to 4 p.m. All prescription drugs will be accepted with no questions asked, according to a news release from the Champaign County Prosecutor’s Office.

The drug take back day addresses growing problems in Champaign County, the news release said, including prescription drug abuse and misuse. The collection also helps to prevent medications from entering the local ground water.

Ohio’s rates of drug abuse and misuse are higher than the U.S. rate, the news release said, with 96 percent of unintentional poisoning deaths in the state coming from drugs and medications.

The JSP Joint Fire District will also hold a Safety Day event on Saturday that will feature fire trucks, tractors and dump trucks on display. The Urbana Fire Division Fire Safety House will also be on display.

Parents can have children fingerprinted by the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office for the Ident-a-Kid program. Free food will be available, as well as a foam pit.

All are welcome to drop off prescription medications, the release said, and attend the Safety Day event.
