Champaign sheriff: Man shoots himself to death

A man who may have been running to avoid capture died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound Monday in Johnson Twp., the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office said.

The man, whose name and age were not released, ran from a residence at 1400 N. Elm Tree Road sometime before 6 p.m., Sheriff Matthew Melvin’s office said in a news release Monday night.

Sheriff’s units were dispatched to the address at about 5 p.m. to serve an arrest warrant. The details regarding that warrant were not available late Monday night, according to the sheriff’s office.

An armed male fled the residence and was later found with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to the sheriff’s office. The man was taken to Miami Valley Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Details about what kind of weapon he had or where he was wounded also were not available late Monday night.
