The Champaign County Sheriff’s Office is asking the public to help find a potential witness to a drowning last week on the Mad River.

The sheriff’s office is seeking a man who had been fly fishing at the Mad River crossing at Ohio 55 last Tuesday when 1-year-old Miya Ye and her family were on a canoeing trip.

The Bellfontaine family missed their exit at Ohio 55 and their canoes became stuck on a underwater tree. The family’s canoes overturned, dumping Miya into the rushing water. The child was pulled from the river and rushed to an area hospital, where she was pronounced deceased.
