CHCA students win Math Olympics awards

Twenty-six Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy students in fifth through eighth grades were recently honored for high achievement in the Association of Christian Schools International Math Olympics competition.

“This year’s Math Olympics results turned out to be exceptional,” said Tom Gullett, CHCA Middle School math teacher and Math Olympics adviser. “Almost all of our students placed and we also had seven students receive medals for achieving above and beyond an 85 percent on all questions asked,” which Gullet said is difficult to do.

“In fact, we usually only have one or two students accomplish this each year.”

In March, the students completed a series of four challenging tests on computation or reasoning, given in succession with a time of 11 minutes for each. Participants who won ribbons and certificates for demonstrating advanced math skills included:

Reasoning:

Fifth grade: Julian Herman of Loveland, first place; Abby Jutt of Mason, second place; and Maia Czarnecki of Mason, fourth place.

Sixth grade: Max Tongdangjoue of Liberty Twp., first place; Daniel Hogan of Montgomery, second place; and Calvin Huang of West Chester Twp., third place.
