City council to consider renaming recreation center

The Vandalia City Council will consider a recommendation to rename the Vandalia Recreation Center after former City Manager Bruce Sucher.

The issue was first discussed during the May 15 council meeting and is expected to be voted on in June.

Council received a letter from Larry Taylor, vice president of Beau Townsend Ford, recommending the Rec Center be named after Sucher.

“I don’t believe we would have a Recreation Center if it wasn’t for Bruce,” wrote Taylor.

Sucher, who passed away in March 2017, had served the city as a police officer, chief of police, and city manager. He was serving as president of the Vandalia-Butler Board of Education at the time of his death.

The next Vandalia Council meeting is Monday, June 5. Study sessions begin at 6 p.m. and the regular meeting begins at 7 p.m.
