Cloudy with a Chance of Podcast: Pumpkin Edition

Fall is here and that means pumpkins are available all over the Miami Valley.

A popular spot in Yellow Springs to enjoy all things fall related is at Young’s Jersey Dairy.

Farm manager Stuart Young sat down with Storm Center 7 Meteorologists Kirstie Zontini and McCall Vrydaghs on some hay to talk about the pumpkin crop and what it is like to be a farmer in Ohio.

Young says their dairy farm has about 40 dairy cows, which means the farm is always producing milk and making cheese. They also have different types of agriculture like pumpkins, alfalfa and corn, to name a few.

Farming in Ohio is “entertaining” to say the least, he said. Young said he is always looking to the sky to figure out when to plant and harvest.

The pumpkin crop this year in southwest/central Ohio didn’t produce as many big pumpkins as it has in years past. Young explains in the podcast what the frequent rain and high heat of summer and early fall did to his crop.

He also talks about what to look for when picking out pumpkins, and how to make sure your jack-o-lantern lasts.
