Cold weather won’t keep these drivers from getting meals to seniors in Greene County

Snow and bitter cold temperatures are the main focus right now, but this weather won’t keep drivers from getting hot meals and more to over 100 people in Greene County.

Each meal is made, packaged, then delivered to clients by workers at the Xenia Adult Recreation & Services Center. These meals are made possible through contracts, donations and fundraisers.

Tina Vanhoose is one of at least eight drivers who transport food to people age 60 and older.

“It’s slippery sometimes and you have to be careful,” she said. “They don’t have the ability to clear their own sidewalks. It can be hazardous, but they need their food.”

Executive Director Judy Baker said the workers serve about 30,000 meals a year, but with a bigger kitchen in the new facility off Progress Road they hope to increase that number.

“It was designed for what we do,” she said. “We know there’s a need in the community and we now have the capacity to do that,” Baker said.

Baker says deliveries may be cancelled to protect drivers if the weather gets too icy or snowy, but there’s a backup plan so no one goes hungry.

“We sent out a couple of extra meals in September/October time frame just in case there are days when the drivers can’t get out to the homes so that the clients will have an extra meal in case our drivers can’t deliver a certain day,” she said.

Vanhoose says she’ll brave the weather to see the smile on her clients faces when she gets there.

“They’re always grateful. Doesn’t matter what the weather is,” she said.
