Coroner confirms woman died after truck hit awning

The Montgomery County Coroner’s Office confirmed Monday that Helen N. Mullins, 93, died June 12 from injuries suffered June 1 when a delivery truck knocked off a piece of awning at a Sycamore Glen Retirement Community building.

Mullins, a resident at the Miamisburg senior community, was one of two people injured when a commercial vehicle hit an awning in front of the assisted living facility entrance at 317 Sycamore Glen Drive.

A Miamisburg police report was not available Monday, but police sources said the investigation is ongoing. No information was available about the other injured person.

Careflight responded after crews were called when it was reported that a female was struck by an object on June 1. Caution tape was placed around the entrance to the senior center and some residents were told to exit the building from a different door.

Signs newly put up at the senior center instruct commercial drivers to drive to the back of the building for deliveries. The awning has not been fully repaired.

Mullins was survived by three daughters, a son, and their spouses, along with nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren, according to an online obituary.

Mullins was employed at Merrie-Time Nursery School and Dayton Christian Schools, according to the obituary.

It also said Mullins was a founding member of Hillside Chapel Christian & Missionary Alliance Church in Beavercreek and a volunteer for Kettering Hospital.
