Cottage-style furniture offered at new business

Couple refurbish furniture that otherwise would go to curb

MIAMISBURG — After nine years in the antique business, a married couple decided to open a storefront in Miamisburg called Ourtiques.

Store owners Lysle and Renee McMechan opened the store at the end of November at 12 S. High St. because of the high demand for their products, Renee McMechan said.

The couple refurbishes old, vintage furniture and paints it in a cottage style, McMechan said, adding that they also use parts of multiple pieces of old furniture to make new ones.

“We salvage (furniture) that would otherwise go to the curb, take the vintage parts and make other stuff out of them,” she said.

Lysle and Renee McMechan started out in the antique business after the economy ended their construction company, Willis Construction Co., she said.

“My husband has been an auctioneer for 29 years,” she said.

“After (our construction company) didn’t win the battle with the economy, we decided to go into antiques.”

Prior to opening the store, the couple sold their pieces to various stores and dealers around the state, McMechan said.

The Ourtiques store holds about 80 pieces of refurbished furniture, but also offers small collectibles and the couple’s line of soy candles, Catherine’s Country Candles, that they make themselves.

Not only do the McMechans sell their refurbished furniture, they also buy furniture from people to refurbish and then resell in their store, as well as take private jobs to refurbish furniture.

“(Ourtiques) is a great little shop that has a unique product where they take antiques and make them into different furniture,” said Bonnie Nolan, president of the Miamisburg Merchant Association.

“The uniqueness is something people are interested in seeing (in Miamisburg).”

Not only is the store unique, Nolan said, but the prices are reasonable.

“For people looking for a value, this a great way to go for different furniture in the antique market,” Nolan added.
