Country gift shop opens in Hamilton

Saturday's Business In brief

NEW BUSINESS

Willow Creek Primitives & Gifts hosted a grand opening Saturday at 5574 Eureka Drive, Hamilton.

Melissa Skeans, of Trenton, opened the gift shop last month specializing in decorative antique ladders, windows and chairs and gift baskets. With the help of her mother, Skeans puts together and decorates most of the gift baskets for sale.

Skeans said she opened a gift shop in Indiana two years ago, but decided to close it and open a store closer to home. Willow Creek is one of the few places selling country decor in Hamilton, Skeans said.

The store is open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. For more information, call the store at (513) 863-9275.

AK STEEL

Company stops production at Ashland Coke

AK Steel Holding Corp. stopped production Tuesday at its coke plant in Ashland, Ky., said Alan McCoy, AK spokesman.

Ashland Coke had about 263 employees at the beginning the year, McCoy said. Of those, 56 employees retired and a little more than 170 other employees were placed at AK Steel’s steel plant in Ashland, which was most of the remaining workers, he said.

The company announced in December it would permanently close the Ashland coke plant by June 30 of this year because it is no longer cost competitive due to increased maintenance costs and environmental regulations.

AK Steel, based in West Chester Twp., operates Middletown Works.
