Ninety-three cyclists – some from as far away as Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – converged on Wright-Patterson Air Force Base’s Tennis Club parking lot in Area A late in the afternoon of April 9 for the first Blue Streak Time Trial of the 2019 season.

The sky was clear and temperatures pleasant, but a strong wind out of the north played a role in the competition.

Josh Bozue of Fairborn won his eighth consecutive Blue Streak event, finishing the 10-mile course first overall with a time of 20:45 for a 28.9 mph average. Bozue’s speed was one of the fastest ever recorded on Blue Streak with a conventional time trial bicycle.

The fastest woman was Melissa Lee of the Fort Wayne, Indiana, Outfitters, who finished in 25:14 for a 23.8 mph average.

Jack Hudson, retired director of the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force, is a long-time Blue Streak rider. The retired lieutenant colonel used his new time trial bike to set a personal Blue Streak record of 27:49 for a 21.6 mph average.

Hudson said afterward: “I am getting used to the new bike. I am looking forward to better times as the season progresses. The new bike definitely helped. I have also done additional time trial training indoors. It is challenging to lead the 11:30 (a.m.) spin class and then turn into the time trial. The wind was definitely a factor. Blue Streak is safe and well run.”

Hudson continues to teach the spinning classes in the Wright Field Fitness Center in Area B, which he has taught for several years.

The next Blue Streak Time Trial will take place May 14. Participating riders will gather in the Area A Tennis Club parking lot with their bicycles and helmets between 5 and 5:30 p.m.

Participants are asked to register and obtain numbers at the table set up in the lot by 5:30 p.m. Helmets are required. Bicyclists will be released at 30-second intervals to ride the 10-mile course, starting at 6 p.m.

Blue Streak Time Trials will continue the second Tuesday of each month through October. These Tuesdays include June 11, July 9, Aug. 13, Sept. 10 and Oct. 8.

Those without base access must pre-register at least 10 days before each Blue Streak Time Trial by going to the Speedy Feet website at http://www.speedy-feet.com/race-entry.php?id=1472.
