Dangerous intersection has fatal crash

A second crash occurred, involving a police cruiser.

Staff Report

NEW CARLISLE — A man was killed in a two-vehicle wreck Tuesday afternoon at Ohio 235 and Ohio 41.

The man’s name and age had not been released Tuesday evening. He was driving a Ford Contour.

The driver of the other vehicle, a Jeep Cherokee, refused medical treatment. He was identified as a male in his 20s, said Lt. Matthew Cleaveland, Ohio Highway Patrol Springfield post commander.

According to a preliminary investigation by the patrol, the Contour was heading west on Ohio 41 while the Cherokee was eastbound and in the process of making a turn to head north on 235.

According to the state patrol, the Cherokee hit the driver’s side door of the Contour, knocking the vehicle in a grassy area off the roadway.

“Right now, we believe the Jeep Cherokee is at fault,” Cleaveland said.

The crash occurred at 3:48 p.m. and remains under investigation. Neither alcohol nor drugs appear to be factors in the accident and an accident scene reconstructionist will be part of the investigation, Cleaveland said.

He said the intersection has been traditionally bad, noting that there have been several fatal crashes there in recent years. Traffic studies are being conducted on the intersection.

A second crash occurred at the same intersection as police conducted their investigation.

A car entered the intersection and clipped a North Hampton police cruiser after law enforcement closed the road. The Clark County Sheriff’s Office is handling that incident. No one was injured and the damage was minor, Cleaveland said.
