A longtime Middletown business has reopened after nearly four years.

Davey’s Super Carry-Out, which closed in January 2009 after a 52-year run, opened in December under new ownership and has added gas pumps to the business at 1510 Germantown Road.

The Davey’s property was purchased for $210,000 by a Tipp City company that renovated the interior, greatly reducing the size of the store, and adding fuel stations, said Amarjit Singh, owner of N&G Takhar Oil Co. The company spent about $34,000 to install the canopy for the gas station and $32,000 remodeling the inside, according to the city’s monthly building permits.

Singh’s company operates about 30 Valero gas stations in the Dayton and Cincinnati markets, he said.

Davey’s was operated by Bob Davidson and his family for decades and was well-known for its deli selection.

Staying competitive in the fuel business is a major priority at Davey’s, said Sonny Patel, the store’s manager. He said he drives around Middletown daily and checks out the gas prices at area stations. He makes sure the gas at Davey’s is a few cents less per gallon than the competition. On Tuesday, gas at Davey’s was $3.63 a gallon, three cents less than the station across the street.

Patel said for the grocery business to thrive, people have to be attracted by the low prices at the pump. He said those who live in the neighborhood have been very supportive of the business, and since it opened, there have been only a few reports of shoplifting.

“We like it here,” Patel said.

While Davey’s looks similar from the outside, there is a stark constant to the interior. The former Davey’s was about 25,000-square-feet, but the new Davey’s is about 3,000-square-feet, Patel said. The rest of the two-story building is blocked off, and the signs from the grocery business are still hanging in the storage area.

Patel said there are no plans to expand the business or use the extra space for anything other than storage.

Besides gas, Davey’s offers a beer cave with an extensive beer selection, groceries, a coffee bar, a deli, Hunt Brothers Pizza and numerous Ohio Lottery games.
