Dayton Memorial Day rally seeks to bring an end to gun violence

The group Bags Filled with Hearts will host a Memorial Day Community United Peace Rally in Dayton for a movement to get guns off the streets and to help save area youths from violence.

Bags Filled with Hearts is a nonprofit organization.

A balloon release will be held at 7 p.m. Monday for local families who have lost a loved one to gun violence.

There will be many performances at the rally. They include Dirt Dan, Juany Darden, Streetmoney Munch, Steven Earnest, Jason DBKS and Loyal Wazz. DJ Domino’ will be the DJ.

The event is sponsored by Danners Market, More for Less and Kroger. The local food vendor will be T&K Smokey BBQ.

RazDaBar Sound and Management will give away a $100 gift certificate, according to owner Dawn Montgomery.

“The Community United Memorial Day Peace Rally is a time to celebrate our community and come together to remember those we have lost to senseless violence,” said Montgomery. “We hope it will lead to important conversations and additional steps taken to prevent the needless loss of life in the future.”

“It is also a fun family event, with lots of activities and free food for the children and vendors and great local entertainment for all.”

Montgomery’s late husband, Moses, better known as “Moe Beats” to those who worked with him, was an advocate on keeping youth safe and guns off the street in the Dayton community. He was a local hip-hop mogul in the area for years and died after a battle with cancer in 2016.

The rally will be held on Monday from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. at McIntosh Park, formerly known as Riverview Park at the corner of West Riverview Avenue and Edwin C. Moses Boulevard.
