DEERFIELD TWP. — L-3 Communications, a defense contractor, is closing its Nova Engineering division, according to Mark Fischer, president of Nova Engineering.

The Ohio Department of Development announced in December 2010 that the company received a $200,000 Rapid Outreach Grant for its expansion and consolidation in Deerfield Twp. The project cost more than $10.4 million, and was expected to create 60 jobs and retain 142, according to Ohio Department of Development.

The company said the closing will affect 96 employees. The division will close in six to eight months, the company said.

Fischer said L-3 Communications Cincinnati Electronics, 7500 Innovation Way, Mason, is not closing. More questions were referred to corporate communications, which didn’t respond Wednesday.

L-3 Nova Engineering, located at 4393 Digital Way, is a high-tech business that designs, develops and makes digital and real-time embedded software, according to the company. It also makes hardware for communications and telemetry applications, including flight and ground engagement simulation, imaging target detection and fusion-enabled sensor technology, according to the company.

The announcement comes almost a year after Nova Engineering said it had moved its West Chester Twp. and Cincinnati locations to the new facility in Deerfield Twp.

In a news release in 2010, the company said, “The new facility will better accommodate the company’s growth from competitive program wins and resulting staff increases, while also achieving significant cost savings.”

Deerfield Twp. Administrator Bill Becker didn’t know about the company closure before Wednesday. He said it won’t impact revenues for the township, because the township doesn’t collect income taxes.

“It’s an impact on the economy and the region,” Becker said.
