MIDDLETOWN — Failing to file your city income tax could cost you a tax in court.
It’s tax time, and while most residents remember to file their state and federal income taxes, many forget they need to file one for the city of Middletown, said Sandy Williams-Mueller, income tax superintendent for the city of Middletown.
In fact, the city sent out 12,000 failure to file letters last year. That’s about the same as past years — showing that collecting income tax is an ongoing issue in Middletown, Williams-Mueller said.
The city regularly runs reports on those who have failed to file or pay their taxes and forward the results to the Middletown Municipal Court. Williams-Mueller said 1,169 charges were processed by the courts for tax violations last year.
“If we didn’t have that local court downstairs, we really would be hurting,” Williams-Mueller said.
Failing to file or pay is a criminal misdemeanor punishable by a maximum fine of $500 and 60 days in jail, according to court officials.
The local tax forms can’t be filed electronically and Williams-Mueller said the city needs the original W2s to properly file along with the front page of the 1040 federal form. Free help is available at the city tax office on the second floor of the city building.
Anyone age 65 and younger must file their taxes, even if their income was nontaxable, such as a Social Security check. Williams-Mueller said the city sent out forms in December and residents must check the box that they had no income and send it back in order to file.
According to the city, there are 29,000 active income tax accounts in Middletown. Last year, the city received 21,500 individual returns from residents.
Thanks to a federal holiday, residents will have a few extra days to file their local income tax. April 18 is the deadline. Williams-Mueller said the city tax office will have extended hours three days before the deadline to assist filers, but returns must be received by 7 p.m. that day or be postmarked as April 18 to be counted on time.
