Driver charged in deadly church bus crash

UPDATE @ 3 p.m. (Aug. 4): The driver in the fatal church bus crash, 53-year-old Charles goodman, of Chicago, told reporters today that the bus had mechanical problems with its suspension, power steering and it was overheating, according to the Associated Press.

A judge today appointed a public defender for Goodman, who is charged with reckless homicide and driving with a suspended license; he is being held in the Hancock County Jail in Greenfield, Ind., according to AP’s report.

Goodman said his license was not suspended. The Hancock County prosecutor said the defendant admitted falling asleep at the wheel, AP reported.

UPDATE @ 3:45 p.m. (July 29): The youth conference in Riverside, where a bus from Indiana was headed on Tuesday night when it crashed and killed a 6-year-old Gary boy, is to resume this evening, the pastor of the conference host said.

Terry Glenn, pastor of the Greater Works Christian Center, said about 20 people who were on that bus when it crashed on Interstate 70 East are expected to arrive in town this afternoon for the 47th annual Deliverance Centers of America conference.

“Our hearts go out to all of those affected by the accident,” Glenn said. “Our hearts are heavy, but we know God is going to be able to strengthen us so we can complete the assignment of this convention.”

The conference on Harshman Road, began Tuesday and resumes at 7 p.m.

Approximately 200 people from throughout the country are expected to attend, Glenn said.

The Indiana State Police identified the fatality as Jacob Williams, of Gary, Ind.

Charles Goodman, 53, who was driving the bus on a suspended driver’s license and who was being sought on a warrant out of Lake County, Ind., remains at Indianapolis Methodist Hospital, according to the ISP. He suffered non-life threatening injuries when he was pinned beneath the wreckage.

ISP officials said the investigation of the crash is continuing and that included an inspection of the wrecked bus that began this morning in Greenfield, Ind.

FIRST REPORT

One child has been killed in a crash on Interstate 70 involving a church bus headed to a youth convention in Riverside.

According to media reports out of Indiana and Chicago, the Indiana State Police said the bus overturned, killing that child, a 6-year-old boy, and the driver had a suspended driver’s license. Eleven other people have been injured.

According to the ISP, Charles Goodman of Gary, Ind., the bus driver, was wanted on a warrant out of Lake County for failure to appear in court for a traffic offense. Goodman, 53, was ejected in the crash and pinned beneath the bus.

He was said to have been alert at the scene, 20 miles east of Indianapolis. He was taken to a hospital by medical helicopter.

NBCChicago.com is reporting that passengers were part of the congregation of St. Jude Deliverance Family Worship Center in Gary, Ind., and were traveling to the Dayton, Ohio, area for a youth convention.

Those same media reports are indicating that hospitals in the Indianapolis area have taken in 11 patients — four listed in fair condition and seven suffering from non-life threatening injuries.
