Madison Twp. firefighters needed the help of several other area fire departments to put out an overnight fire in a garage that spread into a home.

Fire Chief Kent Hall said the fire was reported at a home about 2 a.m. Sunday in the 6600 block of Browns Run Road between Sloebig and Thomas roads.

He said volunteer firefighters had to park on the road and carry their gear to the home with an attached garage that was located at the end of a steep gravel road. Hall said water had to be pumped from tanker trucks as there were no fire hydrants in that area.

“We don’t know what started it,” Hall said. “We believe the fire started in the garage and spread to the house.”

He said arson investigators were called to investigate the fire’s origins but does not think the fire was suspicious.

“No injuries were reported, and they were home at the time of the fire and got out safely with their animals,” he said.

Hall estimated damages at $175,000 as 100% of the garage and 50% of the house was damaged from the fire.

Madison Twp. received mutual aid from fire departments from Franklin Twp. Gratis, Milford Twp., St. Clair Twp. and Wayne Twp., Butler County. The Red Cross set up a canteen to assist firefighters.
