Miami Valley residents can earn a little cash for their old tires and scraps at the Montgomery County Tire Buyback event next month.

The county’s environmental services will hosts its annual tire buyback event, where residents can earn $2 for every scrap or used tire they bring. Residents can bring a maximum of 10 tires per vehicle. The event will be hosted at the Montgomery County Solid Waste District transfer and recycling facility at 1001 Encrete Lane in Moraine.

“Illegal dumpsites are an eyesore, a nuisance, and a breeding ground for pests that can carry disease,” said Montgomery County Commission President Dan Foley. “Our Tire Buyback offers an incentive for citizens to clean up dump sites, beautify their neighborhoods, and protect public health. This is a win-win for local jurisdictions, which are normally stuck footing the bill for cleaning up scrap tires and illegal dumpsites.”

All tires collected at the event will be shredded and recycled, and then used to make playground mulch, landfill liner and other materials. In 2016, the county collected 13,320 tires, weighing about 160 tons. More than 1,300 vehicles passed through the event.
