Fire erupts in chimney, threatens residence

A house fire that erupted in a chimney Monday night and threatened to get into the roof of a home was put out quickly, a fire official said.

Flames had worked their way out of a metal chimney flue pipe, into a wooden chimney box and were on their way to the roof of a home in the 700 block of South Alpha Bellbrook Road, Sugarcreek Twp. Fire Chief Randy Pavlak said.

Crews had to run more than 2,000 feet of hose from a hydrant to the rural residence because it is on a private lane, off the main road.

A relay pumping system, using three engines to get water to the single-family structure, had to be set up because of the home's distance from the road, Pavlak said.

All of the residents were safely out of the home when crews arrived, he said, and there were no injuries. Crews were dispatched after a 911 call came in at about 8:11 p.m.

The family is being asked to stay elsewhere for the night, he said.

Pavlak did not place a dollar estimate on the damage.

His crews were assisted by Bellbrook and Washington Twp. fire departments.
