Former booster accused of stealing from Franklin High School band

Felony theft case against Middletown woman headed to a grand jury for review.

FRANKLIN — The case involving a Middletown woman accused of stealing thousands of dollars from the Franklin High School Band Boosters Association was sent to a Warren County grand jury.

Dana Karrick, 32, 530 Garfield St., appeared Friday afternoon before Franklin Municipal Court Judge Rupert E. Ruppert on the fourth-degree felony and waived her right to a preliminary hearing.

Her bond was set at $7,500 or 10 percent cash or surety.

Karrick, whose daughter played in the Franklin High School band, is a former band boosters treasurer. She is accused of stealing about $12,000 during the 2009-10 school year, according to Melissa King, booster board president.

She said Karrick wrote a personal check for $7,905 out of the boosters’ account, kept a $3,000 deposit and made a $691 car payment out of the boosters’ checking account.

King said Karrick’s name was the only one on the account. Now, King said, the account has two names of booster board members.

The board became suspicious when the high school was notified last summer that it still owed $7,000 from the previous year for a band camp in Hocking Hills, Ohio. Karrick allegedly didn’t pay the camp fee.

The boosters raise money by operating the school’s concession stands at football and basketball games. Some of the deposits allegedly were never made, said King, who called the case “very sad” because it involved innocent children who worked hard to earn the money.

“Everything we do is for the kids,” she said. “This hurts.”
